Career and College Readiness

- Factors that influence PA's Future Ready Index

YCAL Symposium - Is there colleagues among you who would like to attend with me? I'm already registered and would love to spend the evening learning together.

Please consider attending this worthwhile event with me.
It's FREE (and includes dinner plus Act 48 hours!)
Above all, THANK YOU for considering this invitation.

From Kevin Appnel, Executive Director at the York county Alliance for Learning:

The 2019 YCAL Career Education and Work Standards Symposium will take place on Thursday February 7, 2019from 4:00PM-7:00PM at York County School of Technology.  This is an event for York County educators, focused on the Career Education and Work Standards, which are vital in effective Chapter 339 plans and Future Ready PA. The event includes four valuable lesson plans that reflect PA's Career Education and Work Standards, Act 48 credits, dinner, and door prizes.

The Symposium is open to all K-12 Educators from YCAL Partner Schools/Districts.  This event encourages empowerment by providing each educator in attendance with four impactful, relevant lesson plans to adapt to the grade level in which they specialize, as well as valuable resources to utilize in their classrooms in the spirit of collaboration.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

WHY SHOULD I ATTEND?
The Career Education and Work Standards Symposium connects attendees with post-secondary and career resources as well as providing some ideas and insights on classroom lessons that directly aides students in career education and professional development.  All topics discussed and information provided will assist in the fulfillment of a school’s Chapter 339 Plan and will assist in ensuring our students are Future Ready

WHAT IS IN IT FOR ME?
To assist in the delivery of this information YCAL provides attendees with the following that they can look forward to:

  • Dinner (and an engaging Keynote Speaker)
  • An Employer Panel Discussion
    • Relay back to your students what employers and colleges are “really looking for” and who said it!
  • Sample Lesson Presentations by your peers at your grade level (K-2, 3-5, 6-8, and 9-12) that you can borrow and build upon for your own classes
  • THREE (3) Act 48 Credits for attending
  • Lots of Door Prizes at the end of the program

HOW MUCH DOES THIS COST?
Your district/school is partnered with YCAL and, because of that, this event (and the dinner and door prizes) is FREE to attend.

HOW DO I SIGN UP?
We thought you’d never ask!  CLICK HERE TO REGISTER (it will take about 30 seconds).  You may register up until February 1st, but we strongly encourage early registration!

We look forward to seeing you there!

Holiday Greetings

Dear Partners in Education:

As we reflect on what this season means to us, consideration is given to people and places around our home, community, and world. Each holiday season carries with it a sense that anything is possible if we only trust in one another. This sense of love and trust causes the rough places to become smooth and the darkness to become light. We can share the positive energy with everyone without fear.

It is my wish that everyone associated with our school, our students, our staff, and our extraordinary stakeholders, take time to share this miracle of love with family and friends. If you are visiting near or far, be careful and watchful in your travels. I have been privileged to serve our school and its community over the past year, I am continuously humbled by your generosity and support as we put students first each and every day.

As 2018 comes to a close, my final thoughts include how continuously impressed I am with the amount of time and energy the staff here at Clearview puts into making sure all students are successful, both academically and mentally! You are an incredibly talented group of teachers who want nothing but the best for our students and families. Thank you for everything you do each and every day that make Clearview Elementary such a dynamic place where everyone is "Real Learning for Real Life!"

Happy holidays,
Teri

School-wide Holiday Decor...

This Monday, each teacher will receive enough bags to give every student in your designated classroom one to decorate. Students will design their bags, holiday style, with crayons (Orwig already tried out all the options for coloring a bag - colored pencils, markers, crayons - and found crayons work best). Check out the video link below to see the end result. Once students have completed their bag, collect, and by using a glue stick create your classroom star(s) [video states seven (7) but Orwig has finished one and it turns out with these bags it will take ten (10)] and turn in to the front office in order to decorate our CV hallways for the holiday. Please take one ROAR this week to make this happen for your class. THANKS!

Announcements:

1. Holiday/Birthday Treats: Please place in your next newsletter a reminder from our district Wellness Committee concerning at-school treats. Click here for your copy.

And...please serve these treats at a time convenient to your class, preferably at the end of the day. Do not send students with their treats during lunch time. Thank you!

" Because of dietary considerations, students are not permitted to share food at lunch. (Student Handbook, pg. 6)"

2. Fire Drill: As a reminder, all fire drills must have all individuals evacuated from the building in 90 seconds or less. Unfortunately, last fire drill we did not pass, therefore, there will be another drill sometime this week in order to fulfill our November requirement.

3. Instructional Rounds was updated for review on Friday, November 2. I haven't heard from any of the partnerships, yet, about a date to conduct a walkthrough with me. So, as a reminder, meet with your instructional round partner and discuss a date of a walkthrough.  Email me your date by December 11, and I will arrange the teacher to observe.

4. Pineapple Board is complete in the Faculty Workroom. Would love to see teachers fill in a spot to welcome other teachers into your classroom to observe your great work. Don't remember what a Pineapple Board does? Click here to check it out!

5. Finally, something THANKFUL to share during this holiday season. Click here to view.

Supervision vs. Evaluation

This week's blog will review 2B of Danielson's Framework for Evaluation.
While supervision is the primary focus of the Danielson Framework (of which we will examine later in the year), PA's Act 82 now uses the rubrics of Danielson's Domains for Evaluation, too.
So why the focus on Domain 2B? Third in importance after Domain 3B & 3C is Establishing a Culture for Learning. As stated in the framework and linked below, "A 'culture for learning' refers to the atmosphere in the classroom that reflects the educational importance of the work undertaken by both students and teacher. It describes the norms that govern the interactions among individuals about the activities and assignments, the value of hard work and perseverance, and the general tone of the class."

EVALUATION:
Purpose-An organizational function designed to assess and make comprehensive judgments about the quality of teacher performance/competence & identify areas for growth. Think teacher assessment and accountability.
Rationale-The state (PA) has an obligation/mandate to protect children/adolescents from being harmed. (physical/emotional/education incompetence)
Scope: Global and comprehensive, looking at both instructional and non-instructional duties, e.g., Danielson's 4 Domains.
Data Focus-Must be uniform, standardized and due process-oriented. Everyone in the same job category must be evaluated by the same criteria.
For the criteria and rubric, click here.

Keep in Mind:
Distinguished is a place visited from time to time, Proficient is where one resides

Supervision vs. Evaluation

-Over the next few weeks, this blog will review Danielson's Framework for Evaluation.
While supervision is the primary focus of the Danielson Framework (of which we will examine later in the year), PA's Act 82 now uses the rubrics of Danielson's Domains for Evaluation, too.
Today's blog will focus on Domain 3B. Why? Second to Domain 3C is Questioning and Discussion Techniques. As stated in the framework and linked below, "Questioning and discussion are the only instructional strategies specifically referred to in the framework for teaching; this fact reflects their central importance to teachers’ practice."

-Over the next few weeks, this blog will review Danielson's Framework for Evaluation.
While supervision is the primary focus of the Danielson Framework (of which we will examine later in the year), PA's Act 82 now uses the rubrics of Danielson's Domains for Evaluation, too.
Today's blog will focus on one such Domain, specifically, 3C. Why? All of Danielson's Framework centers around this one pivotal point and the critical attributes of Domain 3C.

First the rubric, which is the center of scoring evaluations for all 82-1 teachers as defined by PA Legislators:

These videos deserve a second viewing...

From Dr. Deisley's email:

In less than 2 minutes, I think he following video does a nice job of summarizing the information we explored on Thursday during the Trauma-informed discussion. Enjoy!

I am sure that all of you have those familiar butterflies in your stomachs as you anticipate the thrill of starting a new school year. Like you, I look forward to that feeling every year.

Please take the 3:17 to watch this video and reflect on how valuable what you do is. Despite your job title, you are all teachers of our students.

Red Lion is great because of our teachers and staff. Because of YOU.

I'm looking forward to this school year and the amazing experiences you will create for our students.

I share in the sentiments of Dr. Deisley's words and want to express that in the days, weeks, and months ahead, that despite your job title, WE are all teachers of OUR students. RED LION is GREAT because of YOU! Whether the day or weekend begins and ends, please take a moment to REFLECT on how VALUABLE what you do, both TODAY and TOMORROW, is for all connected to our community, locally and globally.

From the three Rs to the four Cs

Students need academics and soft skills to avoid becoming obsolete in future workforce
by Robert Urzillo

"...To survive and thrive economically and occupationally, people will need to be lifetime learners. Lifetime learning will extend to domains beyond their original vocational training. The concept of learning how to learn will be of the greatest importance. Therefore, the question becomes how do we prepare people to learn how to learn?
It is my belief that what we call the basic skills—reading and mathematics—are still the best foundation for continued learning and cognitive growth—but they are just the first step.
Thomas Friedman wrote that in addition to the three R’s, students in the future will need the four C’s: coding, communications, creativity and collaboration.

Future learning

It is my belief that we can no longer train vocational students only for a career in an existing field; instead, the curricula need to be more comprehensive. Rigorous standards in math, science and written and oral communications should be embedded into the vocational curriculum. We must also assess and remediate reading skills.
If we fail to develop an academic program for vocational students that fails to equip them with greater knowledge and skills, we are doing a disservice to both the students and the nation.
To succeed we must be increasingly conscious of the need to promote challenging academic training coupled with a vocational curriculum—and view this as an opportunity, not a problem."
