Connecting with Kids in a Disconnected World

by Trevor Romain

Take a 10 min listen to Trevor's podcast that looks at a chapter named Old Man and The Bicycle

As parent/teacher conferences quickly find their way to us, how might this story impact your relationship with each our families and their students?

Each week I will share another story from Trevor Romain's podcast or a chapter in his book. Each faculty meeting a question will be presented to staff to share out in small groups how one of these stories impacted your classroom and the relationships you share with students, staff, and/or community.

Final Note: At 3 PM the playground will be closed for recess and opened for cars waiting for their students' dismissal at 3:20.

The Commonwealth of PA has passed a new law governing Teacher/Non-Teaching Professional evaluation.  We've added an asynchronous training to the Virtual Professional Development website (virtualpd.rlasd.net) with screencasts about what the new evaluations will mean to each of our professional employees.

See the screencast below with directions for accessing the site, the information, and verifying that you have reviewed the information, which should take a total 15-20 minutes.  We ask that all professionals complete the asynchronous training and verify on the link from the website by Friday, August 27.

Let us know if you have any questions.

Have a WONDERFUL start to your school year!

CV The More You Know...

Universal Sign Sheet -
Please keep your student's original sign sheet in a file within your classroom. The front office will not be storing these once the student returns them. However, we cannot throw them away until the close of the academic year. The original must be kept.
Once a student returns the signed form, please refer back to the Google sheet final student lists. On the lists, you will now see a checkbox with each student and under the heading Universal Sign Off. Please check that box to indicate the form has been received for the 21-22 SY.

BoY Memo Corrections-
Recess/Recess Duty: While there are no rotations for recess duty, it might be a good idea to designate an individual in your grade level to be the "duty" teacher for that cycle day. WHY? It would be the "duty" teachers responsibility to confirm whether or not recess is inside or outside or if any other recess information is needing dissemination prior to the start of the day.

Fall Photo Day: September 16th, 2021

Transportation Forms: No paper copies will be distributed. A letter and Google Form link to inform the front office of transportation requires was already completed in the first few days prior to the start of school. Transportation information has been updated on the SY21-22 Class List. Questions about this list, contact Tara.

Tuesday, June 8, 2021

From the desk of Eric Wilson, Chief Instructional Officer

Good Afternoon-

We have the opportunity to offer June 8, 2021, as a Flex Day for professional learning.  All sessions and offerings are on one site for ease of access to synchronous and asynchronous activities. You also have the ability to create your own learning plan.  As in the past, Flex Day offerings are for new learning experiences that occur outside of the contractual day.  You will need to earn 6 hours to count for one day.  The window to complete these hours is April 13 through June 4.  A "How to Submit" section at the bottom of the page is included for both Act 48 hours and to receive your certificate to be placed in AESOP with your Flex Day absence request.

(You may need to scroll up to get to the top of the page after clicking the link.)

Please review the site for all information regarding the June 8 Flex Day opportunities.  Additionally, here is a screencast of the site providing more details.  As a reminder, you have the choice of fulfilling your contractual time by either using the Flex Day sessions or by working in your building on June 8.  Should you work in the building, please remember to sign in and out.

We hope you find the professional learning sessions engaging and productive.

Homework Help: Paper tutors are online 24/7 ready to help you with a math problem, chemistry question, or to practice Spanish. No matter what you need, just click “ask a tutor” and help is only a message away.

Writing FeedbackSubmit any written work for review under the “Essay Review” tab and have it proofread by a tutor in 24 hours or less. Tutors are always happy to give you feedback on how you can improve your essay

The More You Know:

I received this email from YCAL and thought of each of you and the career tools (authentic opportunities to prepare our students for tomorrow through age appropriate lessons) you use that should be shared with others to review and celebrate. Even present as a team! (i.e. PBL, ICT, Webinars, etc that align with the career ready standards listed below) Maybe you even own a side business that can share your business plan, how you got started, etc.

I hope you not only have value information to share for our age groups, but that you jump at the opportunity to share your knowledge with others in the York County community. More information is below:

Like so many educators, The York County Alliance for Learning (YCAL) has been working hard to address and adapt its program delivery methods, and I’m excited to announce that we will be holding our 11th Annual Career Education and Work Standards Symposium virtually this year.  This virtual event will be almost entirely on-demand with pre-recorded content so attendees can complete the program at their own pace from the end of the school year through September 1, 2021.

You are receiving this message because you have attended the Symposium in the past and we are looking for lesson presenters!

We have an absolute understanding that this year in particular your time is even more scarce and valuable.  Through the help of our co-presenting sponsors, Pennsylvania College of Health Sciences and Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology, we have arranged for each presentation to receive a $50 Amazon gift card (Please note: we can only allocate one gift card per presentation) in appreciation for their effort.

If you are interested in presenting one of the focus grade level sessions, we have a total of 12 spots available for Awareness and Preparation, Career Acquisition, Retention and Advancement, and Entrepreneurship in each focus grade level (K-5, 6-8, and 9-12).  As we have done in the past few years, we will also be offering several administrator sessions that are tailored for administrators but may be viewed by all.

If selected, Breakout Session presenters will be required to do the following:

ü  Record a 15-20 minute video presentation on your assigned topic

ü  Send a downloadable link of the video to info@ycal.us

o   Provide links or send copies of any files utilized that you would be willing to share with your audience

ü  Once the video is uploaded to the YCAL YouTube Channel (unlisted, so only attendees will have the link), you will be asked to occasionally check in on the video's comments section to answer any questions that are asked by attendees

If you, or anyone you might recommend, is interested in applying to present please…

We are hoping to have all presenters on-board by April 1st with all materials finalized to launch the Symposium on May 3rd.  Thank you and I hope you might consider participating as a presenter or attendee!
